Max Cooper was born in 1915 in Smoky Hollow, Iowa. At a young age, he moved with his family to Faulk County, South Dakota, and grew up on a farm. He graduated from Faulkton High School and obtained a teaching certificate from Northern Normal School (now Northern State University) in Aberdeen. In 1939, he married Faymie Snider, and they began their life together in Colorado, where Max became a miner. He later joined the Navy. After the war, he graduated from Colorado State University and earned a Master's Degree from the University of South Dakota. Max and Faymie had three children, Kathleen, Tom, and Mike.
Max was an editor and columnist for the Aberdeen American News in South Dakota for many years. In 1967, the family moved to Michigan, and Max joined the staff of Ferris State University. While there, he wrote weekly columns for a campus publication. After retiring from Ferris, he wrote his columns for the Pioneer Group of newspapers in central Michigan until 1999. Faymie left Max a widower in 1994, and he now lives in northern Michigan near his son Mike and his three young grandchildren. This web site will reprint some of the best of Max's columns from the American News, Ferris State, and the Pioneer Group.
